[China Aluminum Network] US new CAMEL armored vehicles
Keikor2139-T84 aluminum alloy armor plate
The application of aluminum alloy as a armor plate began in the mid-1950s and has been used for more than 60 years. It has been applied to both wheeled armored vehicles and tracked armored vehicles. Armored vehicles have played an important role in search reconnaissance, rescue, and infantry transportation. The first aluminum alloy armored personnel carrier (Mersonnel Vehicle) was the American M113, which used a large amount of aluminum alloy armor. The armor was thick enough not to be penetrated by the bullet pieces, ensuring the safety of personnel, and was much lighter than the previous steel-deck vehicle. Can be transported by plane.
The Army Research Laboratory (ARL) conducted quite a long time on the performance and size of alloys on the side and front armor plates of armored vehicles and conducted a series of simulated live-fire experiments to screen out two types of aluminum alloys with better overall performance. The strength, anti-explosive properties of bullets, resistance to bullet penetration and corrosion resistance are well combined, and also have good formability by intermediate heat treatment. The two alloys are Alloy 2139 and Alloy 7056, which have been used in the aerospace industry. Armored plates are produced by Constellinm, USA, and their registered trademarks are Keikor 2139TM and Keikor 7056TM.
Keikor 2139 alloy is a structural alloy developed for the aerospace industry. It has high strength and fracture toughness. It is an aluminum alloy with a comprehensive performance. After a long series of standardized gunshot and field tests conducted by the US Army Research Laboratory, it is considered It is also a very good armored aluminum alloy. In addition to having good ballistic performance, it also has good corrosion resistance and heat resistance. It does not soften at higher temperatures, and it is highly resistant to armored vehicles. Sex is also an important technical indicator because it has to operate and combat in extremely harsh and complex environments. It is commendable that the 2139 alloy has very low stress corrosion sensitivity.
2139 alloy is an Al-Cu-Mg-Mn-Ag alloy with a low impurity content. As of December 2016, 535 active alloys and very-used alloy models (inactive) registered with the Aluminum Association of America were registered. 158 (a total of 693 alloys), together with the unique unregistered aluminum companies, it is estimated that about 1,000 deformed aluminum alloy models are in use. Of the 693 alloy models listed, 18 contained silver, of which 16 were in the 2XXX series and 2 in the 7XXX series (7009 alloy and 7047 alloy), and the silver content was larger than 0.7%. The solid solubility of Ag in aluminum can reach 55.6% at 566°C, and then changes rapidly with decreasing temperature. Adding (0.1%-0.7%) Ag to 2XXX and 7XXX series can improve their mechanical properties. Performance and stress corrosion cracking resistance, 2139 alloy containing 0.15% Ag - 0.6% Ag. Ag can form Ag2Al compound (γ phase) with Al at 727°C, which contains 88.9% Ag, dense hexagonal lattice.
Earlier used as an armor plate was the 2519-T87 alloy plate, which was later found to have high stress corrosion cracking susceptibility and was eliminated because it was not suitable for combat under complex conditions. The composition (mass %) of the 2139 alloy is as follows: Si0.10, Fe0.15, Cu (4.5-5.5), Mn (0.20-0.60), Mg (0.20-0.80), Cr0.005, Zn0.25, Ti0.15, V0.05, Ag (0.15 - 0.60), the other impurities were a single 0.05, totaling 0.15, and the rest were Al.
The lower mechanical properties of Alloy 2139 are shown in the following table according to US Military Materials Standard MIL-DTL32341A. It is known from the composition of 2139 alloy that it is an alloy with a very low content of impurities, so it has high fracture toughness and fatigue resistance, and its damage resistance is also good.
Keikor 2139 alloy plate has two states: AP/FSP (United States Patent/Federal Patent) is gun-resistant, ie T8 state. The production process of the former state is that artificial aging is performed after appropriate cold working rate, that is, cold working after solid solution treatment and then artificial aging, so that it has good comprehensive performance, and is used for manufacturing the side decks and top decks of armored vehicles. T81 state thick plate production process, after solution treatment by about 1% of the cold deformation, so that a slight increase in strength, and then artificial aging. Armored vehicles made of 2139-T81 alloy plate have stronger protective performance. That is to say, when the protective performance of armored vehicles, etc., 2139-T81 alloy armored vehicles are much lighter, the combat flexibility is higher and the speed is faster.
Research by the US Army Research Laboratory showed that when the armor plates are of equal thickness, the 2139 alloy plate can withstand shot firing at 2110 ft/s while the 5083-H131 alloy and 7039-T64 alloy plate have safe shooting speeds of 1780 ft/s. 1910ft/s.
The antiknock performance of Keikor 2139 alloy is generally better than traditional alloys, especially 2139-T84 alloy, because T84 state plates have higher tensile strength and fracture toughness, and they are well combined. In the standardized blasting test, its plastic deformation is much smaller than that of the 5083-H131 alloy plate. The longer deformation of the 2139-T84 alloy plate is about 50% smaller than that of the 5083-H131 alloy. Therefore, when an explosion is encountered on the battlefield, the impact of the 2139-T84 alloy armored vehicle will be significantly reduced, which can greatly reduce the potential damage.
The anti-explosion state plate (T84) is usually used as the lower deck of armored vehicles. The plates are artificially aged, and the aging temperature is quite high, resulting in some formability. The 2139-T84 alloy armor plate is also subjected to a patented intermediate solution treatment. This plate has both high strength properties, good formability, and low stress in the formed part, which is very advantageous for subsequent forming.
In the manufacture of armored vehicles, whether the connection of components is welded or bolted, the structural strength of the board will decrease. For this reason, Kenlian Aluminum Co., Ltd. has successfully developed a series of 2138-T84 alloy welding wire with its welded structural weld strength and The matrix strength is almost equal, and the welding thermal stress is also low. The Keikor 2139-T84 alloy armored plate is produced at the Kensington Aluminum Company's Revenswood (WV) rolling mill in West Virginia. Aerospace and other high-end materials are its leading products.
After extensive indoor experiments and field live-fire drills conducted by the US Army Research Laboratory, the 2139-T84 alloy's anti-penetrative and explosive shrapnel capabilities are superior to the traditional 5083-H131 and 7039-T6 alloy plates, which have been obtained by the Army Research Laboratory. Certification. The United States has used the Keikor 2139-T84 alloy plate to manufacture a new generation of advanced Army Reconnaissance Concept (CAMEL) CAMEL (Concept for Advanced Mittary Explosion-Mitigating Land). This vehicle is manufactured by Pratt & Miller of Detroit, USA. It has been thoroughly evaluated by the Army's Tank Automotive Research Development and Engineering Center (TARDEC) and various field exercises. All indicators of aluminum alloy armored vehicles are qualified and perform well. This work has also been supported by the combat vehicle prototype platform (CVP, Combat Vehicle Prototype).
In September 2016, the US Army’s relevant departments declared that the armored vehicles (TARDEC) armored to be manufactured in the future will be made of Keikor 2139 alloy plate.
